The Hotel Textile GSM Standard

GSM — grams per square metre — is the single number that most determines how a hospitality towel or robe performs, costs and launders. There is no one “hotel” GSM; there is a correct GSM for each product and each service tier. Here is the whole ladder, by product.

GSM (grams per square metre) measures fabric weight, not quality. For hospitality bath towels, 360 – 500 GSM is the guest tier, 550 – 650 GSM is premium, and 600 – 700 GSM is spa weight. Heavier absorbs more and feels more luxurious, but costs more, dries slower and adds weight to every laundry cycle. Match GSM to the service tier and wash-cycle load — not to the highest number available.

Bathrobe GSM does not read like towel GSM: a 260 GSM waffle robe can out-perform a 400 GSM terry robe on drying speed. Match construction to floor, then weight to tier.

Bed & hospital linen — thread count, not GSM

Bed and hospital linen is specified by thread count (TC) — threads per square inch — not GSM. Higher TC is smoother and more durable to a point; beyond roughly 400 TC the gains are marketing more than performance, and multi-ply yarns are often used to inflate the count (a genuine 300 TC single-ply outperforms a '600 TC' four-ply).

How to verify GSM with a swatch and a scale

Quoted GSM and delivered GSM are not always the same number. Verify it on the first production sample:

  1. Cut a precise 10 × 10 cm swatch — that is 100 cm², one-hundredth of a square metre.
  2. Weigh it in grams on a jeweller's scale, on a conditioned, unwashed sample.
  3. Multiply by 100. A swatch weighing 5.0 g is a 500 GSM fabric.

GSM questions buyers ask

What GSM should a hotel bath towel be?
For hospitality bath towels, 360 – 500 GSM covers guest-floor and high-volume programmes, 550 – 650 GSM is the premium hotel tier, and 600 – 700 GSM is spa and luxury-suite weight. There is no single 'hotel' number — the right GSM is a function of the tier and the wash-cycle load the towel has to survive.
Does higher GSM always mean a better towel?
No. GSM measures weight, not quality. A heavier towel feels more luxurious and absorbs more, but it also costs more, dries slower and adds weight to every laundry cycle — which matters to a commercial laundry paying by the kilo. Above roughly 700 GSM on bath towels you are usually paying for signal, not performance. Match GSM to the use environment, not to the highest number available.
How do I verify a towel's actual GSM?
Cut a precise 10 × 10 cm swatch (100 cm², one-hundredth of a square metre), weigh it on a jeweller's scale in grams, and multiply by 100. A swatch that weighs 5.0 g is a 500 GSM fabric. Do it on a conditioned, unwashed sample; finishes and moisture shift the reading. It is worth doing on the first production sample of any programme — quoted GSM and delivered GSM are not always the same number.
Terry or waffle for a spa bathrobe?
Waffle (220 – 320 GSM) is lighter, dries faster and reads spa-premium; terry (classic 350 – 500 GSM, velour-faced 450 – 600 GSM) is plusher and warmer. Wellness floors that launder robes constantly lean waffle for the drying speed; luxury suites that want a heavy, enveloping robe lean velour-faced terry. The construction decision comes before the weight decision.
