Leicester holds the largest concentration of textile wholesale businesses in the United Kingdom outside Greater Manchester — Companies House lists 144 active textile wholesalers and around 800 general wholesale companies registered in the city. These are stockholders and importers rather than end users: businesses that buy containers, hold goods and resell to retailers, market traders, online sellers and contract buyers. Adalwin Global supplies that trade from four Indian corridors under one Adalwin Commerce LLP counterparty.

Why Leicester buys

What drives the programme here.

The densest wholesale cluster in the country

Leicester's textile trade is concentrated rather than scattered: importers, wholesalers and agents operating within a few square miles, many of them second and third generation. Buying decisions are made by owners, not committees, which shortens the path from sample to first container considerably.

Stockholders, not specifiers

A Leicester wholesaler buys to a shelf and a price point rather than a brand standard. Landed cost per piece, shade consistency across reorders and how many lines fit in one container decide the order — which is why mixed-container programmes matter more here than a single deep SKU.

A manufacturing city that now imports

Leicester's own garment and textile manufacturing base has contracted over two decades, and much of the trade that remains is import-and-distribute. The technical vocabulary is still there — buyers know GSM, thread count and weave — but the production has moved offshore. That makes for informed, spec-literate conversations.

Retail and market supply

A large share of the city's wholesale trade feeds independent retail, market traders and online sellers rather than hospitality. Retail packaging, barcoding and carton labelling to the buyer's own SKU schema are routine parts of the brief.

Compliance ceiling

What Leicester buyers audit.

  • ✓Sedex SMETA 4-pillar (Primark / Tesco / M&S all require)
  • ✓BRC Global Standard for some retail buyers
  • ✓Oeko-Tex Standard 100
  • ✓Modern Slavery Act statement on supplier records
  • ✓UK REACH — hazardous-substance limits (azo dyes, formaldehyde, NPEs, heavy metals), HSE-enforced
  • ✓Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations 2012 — English-language fibre-composition label

Leicester buyer questions

Asked before every first order.

What is the import duty on cotton textiles from India to the UK?
Zero on qualifying goods. Under the India–UK CETA, in force since 15 July 2026, the UK's 12% MFN duty on HS 6302 lines — terry towels and bed, bath and toilet linen — falls to zero, and cotton bathrobes under HS 6207 and 6208 move the same way. Note this comes from CETA specifically: India was graduated out of UK DCTS textile preferences on 1 January 2026.
How long is shipping from India to Leicester?
Around 20 to 25 days on the water FOB JNPT or Mundra via Suez, plus roughly two and a half hours by road from Felixstowe or London Gateway. Programme lead time from approved sample to vessel is quoted separately against specification and volume.
Can one container carry several different product lines?
Yes, and for a stockholder it usually should. Bath towels, bed linen, robes and mats can be consolidated into one container and one invoice. Each line keeps its own minimum — custom shades from 500 pieces per shade — but those quantities combine rather than each requiring a separate shipment.
Do you supply retail packaging and barcodes?
Yes. Retail packaging, woven and printed labels, barcoded polybags and master-carton labelling to your own SKU schema are part of a private-label programme. Send the packaging specification with the product brief so both are quoted together.
