Last week I attended the FIEO Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet in Kolhapur. The format brings cotton textile buyers from different markets into one venue to meet Indian exporters directly. For a merchant exporter building out its US and UK pipeline, it was a useful room to be in.
A few things stood out.
Face-to-face still matters in this trade. Email, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp get a conversation started. A seasoned distributor sizing you up over a cup of chai is where the decision actually gets made. I spent time with a Canadian wholesale importer carrying three decades in textile and apparel — the kind of operator whose first ten minutes with you tell him more than any catalogue.
In conversation with a buyer from Kenya at the FIEO Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet, Kolhapur.
Buyers are triangulating India against Pakistan and Bangladesh constantly. The question I kept hearing was not "Why India?" but "Why your mill, specifically?" The Canadian wholesaler cared about colour and construction consistency across reorders. An Omani importer wanted to understand the zero-duty routing under the India-Oman CEPA and the five-to-seven-day transit from south India. A Japanese trade facilitation body asked about shrinkage percentages and certification documentation. The buyers who looked serious were asking spec questions, not price questions.
The route into Japan is a different conversation entirely. Through JIIPA, the Japan India Industry Promotion Association, we began mapping what it would take to supply Japanese hospitality buyers at scale. Zero-defect culture, GSM tolerance within ±3%, OEKO-TEX documentation, and process discipline that reads more like aerospace than textile. Our Karur and Solapur partner mills can meet those standards. The next step is building the compliance file and sample runs that let a JIIPA-introduced buyer evaluate us without needing a trip to India.
On our sourcing side: Adalwin Global supplies India-origin cotton textiles for hospitality, healthcare, distribution, and private-label programmes. Our partner mills sit in Karur (terry towels, 400–650 GSM, combed cotton), Solapur (bed linen, 200–400 TC, percale and sateen weave), and Panipat (bath mats, rugs, bathrobes). FOB ex-Tuticorin or Chennai. Every lot lab-tested to spec. Full QC and export documentation handled end-to-end. Certifications including OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Sedex SMETA, and ISO 9001 are available through our supplier network.
Kolhapur reminded me of something simple: the slowest, most unglamorous part of this business — physically sitting down with a buyer in a hotel conference room and letting the conversation go where it needs to — is still the part that moves the needle furthest.
If your team is evaluating India as a sourcing option, our 2026 catalogue and a sample pack are a short note away.
